about

John Brown was the legendary abolitionist insurgent who is remembered today for his unsuccessful raid on the Harper's Ferry federal munitions depot in October, 1859, for which he was hanged on December 2, 1859, at the age of 59. In the 1830's, Brown operated a tannery in Kent, Ohio on a hill just above the famous burning river, the Cuyahoga, adding to his rap sheet the role of an early contributor to the pollution of the river.

"John Brown's Dream" is related to "Jimmy Johnson pass the Jug around the Hill", which was probably the earlier of the two tunes. Our version of the tune is inspired by the playing of Tommy Jarrell and his father, Ben Jarrell, from the 1927 recording by Da Costa Woltz's Southern Broadcasters.
